About the Place & what to see :

Chilika is the second largest Brackish water lagoon in Orissa . Spread over 1,100 square kilometres, it runs alQng the borders of three districts ofPuri, Khurda and Ganjam and finally joins the Bay of Bengal through a narrow mouth.

This vast and beautiful lagoon is known to change colors as the day progresses . A passing cloud or a bright sunny day enhance the beauty of this lagoon . Chilika is known for its rich flora and fauna . It supports an economy of its owm . The local fihermen depend on it for their livelihood .

The lagoon has many small islands scattered across it . Some of them having names like "honeymoon island " or the "breakfast island ".

A Launch ride on this lagoon is the best way to explore it .

Satpada: Located on the eastern shore of the lake, it is 55 Kms from Puri. It is bounded by the lagoon on three sides and thus offers an excellent view of the Lagoon. One main attraction of Satpada is Irrawaddy Dolphins. At present 150 unemployed youth of Satpada area are operating 75 number of boats to conduct the tourist into the Lake from Satapada. More details on Satpada on Chilika...

Kalijai: Situated at a distance of about half an hours boat ride is the Kalijai temple ,on a small island .A small parable is associated with this temple , which the boatman will be happy to narrate .

Nalaban: From the shores of Barakul this small island is about 3-4hrs ride , this ride cuts across the lenght of the lagoon , exhibiting the beautiful arch of hills that surround it . Nalaban is famous for migratory birds , flying across as far as Siberia .

Narayani: About 10kms from Barakul by road is the abode of the goddess Narayani , this shrine is built beside a stream .

Parikud & Malud: These small islands in the lagoon are known for their scenic beauty

Approach

Chilika can be approached by "Barakul " or "Satapada "

Road: From Bhubaneshwar to Barkul , then taking a motor launch.

Rail: The connecting Rail heads are at Bhubaneswar or Behrampur.

Air: Nearest airport is Bhubaneswar (102 km)
